Challenge

With a strong community ethos and a prime location on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side.  Komune wanted to highlight its Spring/Summer 25  collection in a meaningful way, drawing inspiration from the renowned Chinese painter Wú Guānzhōng.

Background

Komune is a new fashion retailer located in New York City, dedicated to championing emerging designers and creatives. It’s an experience-driven space designed for discovery and conversation. Through curated media and in-store experiences, Komune highlights the design philosophy and process behind the brands it carries.

Design

I started as I always do—experimenting with loose brushstrokes on my iPad. That led me to the central motif: a weeping willow tree, symbolizing life and new beginnings. After several iterations and rounds of feedback, we finalized a design incorporating Easter eggs representing seven brands in the collection: Blackmerle, XLIM, SF1OG, Isa Boulder, Professor E, and, last but not least, Fax Copy Express.

Once the design was set, I converted it into a vector file and used the Slice tool to create a stencil grid. After printing, I laid out all the sheets on the back pane of the glass while prepping my brushes and tools.

Having completed a few murals in recent months, I’d grown comfortable working with acrylic polymer. However, reaching high places on a step ladder and painting in the cold weather added new challenges.

After two solid days of painting, I was ready to remove the paper stencil—a deeply satisfying moment, like lifting the curtain on my work. I then refined the edges, added a second coat, and incorporated final details.
